{"id":103,"date":"2008-09-01T12:03:24","date_gmt":"2008-09-01T19:03:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.bradbushnell.com\/?p=103"},"modified":"2008-09-01T12:03:24","modified_gmt":"2008-09-01T19:03:24","slug":"google-apps-gmail-and-the-real-value-chain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bradbushnell.com\/?p=103","title":{"rendered":"Google Apps &#8211; Gmail and the real value chain."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I was setting up my own domain, my hosting provider (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\">DreamHost<\/a> &#8212; they are awesome!), offered something that I was not aware about. \u00a0 I could use Google to manage my email. \u00a0Really?<\/p>\n<p>Having been a trusted user of <a href=\"http:\/\/mail.google.com\">Gmail<\/a> when it came out years ago, I was ecstatic at the notion. \u00a0But to run it from my own domain? \u00a0Yep. \u00a0You can have first.last@yourdomain.com and have it managed through Google using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/a\/help\/intl\/en\/admins\/editions.html\">Google Apps<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Corporate IT executives I believe are missing a <\/strong><strong>huge<\/strong><strong> opportunity to outsource their entire email infrastructure.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-weight: normal;\">Email has become one of the most vital pieces of an organizations capabilities. \u00a0If you had a choice, why would you:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. \u00a0<strong>Buy your own hardware<\/strong>: \u00a0lots of money spent on equipment that depreciates like a car the minute you buy it. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. \u00a0P<strong>ay staff to support it<\/strong>. \u00a0Resources to manage your email infrastructure are going to be sizable. \u00a0A single engineer with the necessary system administrative background is going to be around $75K for a mid-level resource.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. \u00a0<strong>Risk a disaster and recovery nightmare<\/strong>. \u00a0Email servers routinely die and run into corruption issues with their information on the disk drive.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">These hardware failures and recovery sessions turn into nail-biting, high intensity adrenaline jumps for the tech professionals having to manage the experience. \u00a0God forbid you lose the CEO or President&#8217;s mailbox. \u00a0<em>Keep your resume updated.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Using Gmail\/Google Apps you get:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">1. \u00a0<strong>System Stability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">2. \u00a0<strong>Universal Access<\/strong>: if you have an internet connection &#8211; you can get your email. \u00a0Think about that disaster recovery plan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">3. \u00a0<strong>Massive Storage<\/strong> &#8211; for free! \u00a07 GB of disk storage for email; 25 GB for $50\/user. \u00a0Think about all the political nightmares avoided by being able to successfully sustain an almost limitless amount of storage for a given user.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">4. \u00a0<strong>Fast Search Capabilities<\/strong>. Looking for an old email in exchange can take forever if you are performing a search across your entire mailbox. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">5. \u00a0<strong>Google Ads<\/strong>: timely placed information from vendors based upon the subject of your email.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">I recently found a logo design company, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mycustomlogo.com\/\">mycustomlogo<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mycustomlogo.com\/\">.com<\/a>, because I was sending an email about that type of subject to a colleague. \u00a0You could never dream of that kind of functionality through exchange.<\/p>\n<p>Clearly this is the way to go for the small firm but I believe that even the larger enterprises are missing out on a key cost containment strategy. \u00a0The premier edition of the service provides additional features which address security and integration issues that would normally prevent you from making such a decision.
